Lab One: Public Speaking: Short Speeches

 

1.       You are the secretary of the literary club of your college/department. Your club is organizing a debate competition, an event normally viewed as insipid, uninteresting by the students. Give a short talk (2/3 minutes) encouraging the students to participate in the competition.

2.       You are the captain of the college volleyball team. Your team has worked very hard throughout the year with the sole goal of becoming the University champion. However, one of the best players of your team has fallen sick, hence cannot play. This has made the team feel very nervous. Prepare a short speech to boost the morale of your team members. Think of the strengths of the team and give an inspiring talk (2/3 minutes)

3.       You are General Secretary of students’ council. At a function at the college/department, you have been assigned the duty of introducing the guest. Think of the head of any institution around or any other person you are familiar with and introduce him/her to the audience. Include the position/s held by the guest, his/her special achievements, make the guest feel comfortable, express a sense of pride for having him/her amidst you; express a sense of gratitude towards him/her. (2 minutes)

4.       You have won an award/ a prize. The office/institution where you work/ study has orgainised a high tea to congratulate you. Express your sense of gratitude towards the head of the office/institution, your colleagues for their encouragement in your endeavor. Thank them for the honour they have bestowed on you by giving you this treat. (2 minutes)

5.       Being one of the few educated persons in your village, you feel concerned about the state of affairs at your village, namely lack of any sense of sanitation and hygiene, proper childcare, illiteracy, etc. Choose any one issue (do not mix up many issues) and prepare a talk to convince the adult audience in your village regarding the issue. Explain the significance and mention the steps to be taken to eliminate the evil. (3-4 minutes).
